For many people, the world of entrepreneurship looks very competitive, fast paced and demanding. While this holds true, how can an entrepreneur do both: succeed in business and lead a balanced life?
If you are a start-up founder or an SME owner, you know what this is about. Big dreams, long to-do-lists, short days, last minute changes, pop-up problems, lengthy government procedures,.... and the list goes on.
But life can't go on this way. It's too much stress to take.
This article is here to help you, the modern life entrepreneur, practise the ancient wisdom of the Buddha. Check these 5 tips to help you cultivate more peace and productivity in your daily life.
1. You Are Not Your Business
The business is an idea that you brought into action. It can have its own flaws and merits.
You? You are a Soul, that lives in this world with a body, heart and brain.
You and your business are two different entities.
The more awareness of the soul you have, the better are the ideas of the brain and the emotions of the heart... and so the more likely it is that you make a successful business.
The Soul is always right. Ideas and emotions can be right/ wrong and they evolve over time. So does your business.
Believe so, whether your business skyrockets or fails miserably. Stay de-tached.
2. You Are The Number 1 Priority
The essence of the matter is that the entrepreneur, at the start up or incubation stage, is the most important priority. S/he dreams, takes decisions and networks.
When working too hard or over stressing about work, your are using rather than investing in yourself. Being burnt out means it's way less likely that you will take wise decisions or cultivate meaningful business relationships.
To have a high ROI for yourself, you should balance your emotional, physical and mental needs through daily practices of wellness.
3. Practise Daily Wellness
This is key to life long balance and a strong entrepreneurial character. Find out what makes you feel super good. Is it sports, meditation, yoga, breathing exercises, prayer? Do it daily.
Also, whenever stressed at work, make sure to practise what makes you relax. Try breathing. Simply, take a 2 minute break. Inhale and exhale while giving your attention to your breath. You will feel refreshed, disconnected from stress and stronger. Everything else comes after your wellness.
4. Grow Your Farm (Effort focus vs. Result focus)
Business owners, sometimes tend to be pushy with life. They tend to assume that the harder they work, the faster and the better the results will be. That's not fully true.
One's business skill, great ideas, efforts and relationships take time to evolve into something great. Just like the farmer, an entrepreneur should plant the seed, water and fertilise the plant and leave it to grow. Trust the natural flow of life and focus on what you can do at the present moment, with a relaxed state of mind.
5. Hold your Horses!
You've definitely heard so many people talk about passion and how one must turn their passion into business. There is no doubt that passion is a very powerful key to success, but sometimes it can be an overwhelming feeling that blinds your business logic. Passion is not enough.
The business world appreciates passion only if it is employed in a viable business model. Work on understanding your customer and solving a problem that he has, while holding the horses of your heart. Control your passion and don't let it control you.
It takes faith and patience to change one's habits. If the Budhha was an entrepreneur, he would have reminded us again of why doing business is valuable: to improve our lives and the lives of others. Start right, from within.
